A Painting Transformed into a Three-Dimensional Scene
This diorama brings Grant Wood’s iconic American Gothic to life in three dimensions, recreating its two main figures as full-body sculptures and placing them in front of a partial reconstruction of the distinctive house depicted in the original painting.

The essential elements that made the work instantly recognizable have been preserved: the couple, their stern and restrained expressions, their clothing, the pitchfork, and the characteristic architecture of the house. However, this diorama goes beyond the original image, imagining what might exist outside the boundaries of the painting.

To expand the scene, I have added several elements that do not appear in the original artwork: a pig, a dog, a milk jug, and a watering can. These everyday objects are not intended to alter Grant Wood’s painting, but rather to expand its world and introduce a new narrative dimension.

The pig and the dog suggest the presence of farm animals, while the milk jug and watering can evoke the everyday activities of rural life. Together, these details help create the impression that the characters are not simply posing for a portrait, but are part of an ordinary moment in the life of an American farm.

The house has also been reconstructed only as far as necessary to reproduce the portion visible in the painting, as though the original canvas had been extended beyond its frame and into physical space. The result is a three-dimensional interpretation of American Gothic: a scene based on one of the world’s most recognizable paintings, but expanded into a tangible environment that allows the viewer to explore new perspectives and discover details that remained beyond the original frame.
